Facebook Chat In Adium
09May08
Adium just added support for Facebook chat. I wanted to try it out, but since they don’t have any nightly builds that I’m aware of, I had to build it myself. You can get my build here (scroll down to get the download link). I am, of course, not responsible if this sets your computer on fire, deletes all your files, or causes you any other pain or loss. This is not an officially sanctioned Adium release. Adium is OS X only, but if you want Facebook chat on Windows, try Digsby, which I hear is the new hotness.
UPDATE 5/15: New build, which fixes whatever Facebook changed. It works again.
By the way, Mac/Facebook users might want to check out Facile.
Hi,
Just wondering if you get the overly large “F” service icon? I’m running your build from above, and I have my view to show the service icons in the contact list and the Facebook service icon is HUGE :)
Just not sure if there is a file I can edit to use my own custom Facebook icons?
Thanks,
Shane.
OK - just found a better icon than mine:

Thanks,
Shane.
I’m also getting the large service icon, how do you change it to a smaller one?
Downloading now! :-)
@Shane - Hello fellow MacTalker!
Hi,
To fix the large Facebook service icon, close Adium and:
1. Right click on Eli’s Adium build
2. Choose “Show Package Contents”
3. Browse to “/Contents/Plugins”
4. Right click on “Facebook.AdiumPlugin”
5. Choose “Show Package Contents”
6. Browse to “/Contents/Resources”
7. Right click the “facebook-small.gif” and choose “Copy”
8. Right click in the Finder window and choose “Paste”
9. Rename “facebook.gif” to something else (ie facebook.gif.bak)
10. Rename facebook-small-copy.gif to facebook.gif
You can now close the window and start Adium again. The service icon will now be small.
I highly recommend grabbing the icon I linked to above, resizing it to 16×16 and saving as facebook.gif and using it instead - the gif included with Adium is kinda crappy :)
Regards,
Shane.
Wonderful .. that worked a treat .. thanks Shane :)
I just wanted to confirm that Digsby is the new hotness!
there’s also this facebook icon:

Doesn’t work for me :( I can create a Facebook account but it doesn’t sign on, and when I look at the options the server and port are empty. Should there be something in there?
Andy, I think the options are irrelevant. It didn’t take for me the first time, either. Try signing onto JUST Facebook without the other services.
Eli: i posted this on the adium blog, but it appears that the facebook implementation is flawed as after a while it refuses to update who is on/offline. im not sure if this is a problem with the build you have made or in general (and wont know until adium 1.3.0 is released) - but have confirmed that this happens by logging onto the facebook site and receiving a completely different set of online contacts
Here is a new nighty build (08-05-11) with the icon issue solved: http://upload.moigneu.net/Adium-080511.zip
mark, it’s likely that since they just announced Facebook support, there are bugs. Just give it time.
HEY!!!
Ok so i wasn’t really liking that the facebook group was so long and made the scroll bar always be there when i had the group expanded, so i detatched the facebook group and attatched it it to the right side of my screen-
now i can show normal contacts by mousing over to the left side of the screen, and facebook contacts by mousing over to the right! It looks pretty sweet :-)
here’s a screen shot, although i’m sure you can imagine it anyway-

I log in but i dont see any contacts…weird…
Strange, it was working fine and then I logged onto facebook and since then it says it’s connected but no one shows up in my friends list (although they do on the facebook website) ..
Do we know if facebook have changed it at all in the last day or so? As at the moment it doesn’t work at all :(
Facebook did change their setup. Other Facebook chat programs are not working (Digsby, for example).
Facebook chat on digsby seems to be working fine
I also can not get my Facebook contacts to show in this build.
no contacts… even with the new build. although, i am seen online through the chat on the facebook site… when someone messages me i get the message, am somewhat able to chat back, but there name shows up as a 7 digit (i believe) code.
Stefano, it still works for me.
